The Ugly Duckling at Martin Mill was, it is believed, once called the "Stagecoach Inn," before the arrival of the railway from Deal prompted the name change to "Station Hotel." However, at present I have seen no documentation confirming this.

Rumour has it that the name changed in the early 70s to the "Ugly Duckling" as the building looked so sad.

According to the minutes of the Langdon Parish Council, 19 May 2008, they were "sorry to learn that The "Ugly Duckling" has been forced to close as the sale had fallen through".

Photos below shows the pub in June 2010. The wall seems to have gone and sign removed, although the second photo still shows the name of the pub and that it was supplied by Scottish and Newcastle. The other end say "Freehouse".

The Ugly Duckling team gained their fifth Division 3 victory of the season, beating Cherry Tree 3-2 on Sunday.

The CAMRA branch meeting of June 2008 reported that the "Ugly Duckling" was up for sale.

Ugly Ducking into beautiful homes?

A FORMER pub in Martin Mill could be converted into homes.

The Ugly Duckling freehold has been bought by a Kent hotel operator for £220,000. An application to change the pub into a residential property is to be made.

Kevin Chapman, from sale agents Christie & Co, said: "There is continued demand for similar properties and businesses - even in the current economic circumstances."

Gone for good

THE final pints have probably been pulled at a village pub, which looks unlikely to ever reopen for business.

The Ugly Duckling at Martin Mill has been sold for about £220,000 and the buyer is a former hotel operator in Kent who will now seek planning permission to change the building to a home.

Portchalis album 1977

PORTCHALICE — AN 'INTERNATIONAL' FOLK GROUP

Although the Group is Dover based, the lads - who all work in the port - are far from being natives of Kent. Indeed, the sole English representative is Andy Bassil who hails from Shoreham in Sussex. Paul Lunsford, the Group's banjo player, has lived most of his life in the Americas before moving to Wales and eventually Dover. The remainder of the Group is a trio of Scots - or to be more accurate, two Fifers and a Scotsman. Jim (Fiddler) Stewart and Roy Landeg are natives of the ancient kingdom of Fife on the East Coast of Scotland, while jovial Jimmy Gorman comes from Greenock in the West.

Roy Landeg

On this, their first album, the Group is heard in concert at ‘The Ugly Duckling', an attractive country pub at Martin Mill near Dover. It was in this pub that the lads moulded and polished themselves into the professional outfit recorded here.

This is a high quality, stereo record: treat it carefully. Also a suitably designed cartridge in a lightweight pick up. (Most recent equipment is correctly fitted but if in doubt consult your dealer) Keep the record and your stylus scrupulously clean. Always replace the record in its sleeve alter playing and handle it only by its rim and centre label
