Sandgate War Memorial 2016

Above photo, 2016, showing the Sandgate War Memorial, the location close to where the "Victoria Tavern" once stood.

Not to be confused for the "Victoria" which was on the opposite side to this premises.

This was thought to have stood on the opposite corner to the "Fleur de Lis" and is now where the War Memorial stands.

Although it is believed it was opened up as part of the 1830's beer act, shortly after that was passed, it's name does not appear until 1859.

Kentish Gazette 24 May 1859.

SANDGATE. SUICIDE OF A PUBLICAN.

Robert Downes formerly landlord of the "Marquis of Granby," High Street, Folkestone, but latterly keeping the "Victoria" at Sandgate, committed suicide by hanging himself on Friday morning in an outhouse attached to the premises. Family quarrels are assigned as the cause.

From the Whitstable Times, 6 August, 1870.

SANDGATE. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

A double attempt was made by a Servant of 3rd Buffs, to commit self destruction on Monday evening last. He first attempted to stab himself in the “Victoria” public house, with his bayonet; but his belt happily received the point. He then rushed down to the sea, followed by four of his comrades, who succeeded in overtaking him in time to prevent him accomplishing his design, and then took him safely home.
