This is one of two Wetherspoon's tied pub in Canterbury. (2018)

The pub takes its name from its proximity to Canterbury's West Gate, one of the finest medieval gateways in Britain.

It is a Grade II listed building, and dates from the 17th century. Over the years, it has been modified and rebuilt, and has lost much of its timber frame and original features.

Open in 1999 and swallowed up what used to be the "Falstaff Tap" at number 5.

When the "Falstaff Tap" became the "Tap" and subsequently closed, it was not subsumed within the "Westgate Inn." The "Falstaff Tap" site is still owned by the "Falstaff Hotel" and the premises are still used for storage and staff accommodation. The old bat and trap pitch became hotel parking.

It is said to have been the first pub in Canterbury that became a non smoking pub in 2005.
