In 1903 the pub was owned by the East Kent Brewery, Sandwich.
It certainly no longer looks inviting as a public house and to date I do
not know when it ceased to trade. Obviously after 1922.
The earliest date I have is 1840 but the Deal History Society date it
even further back to 1828.

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT.
By L. W. Cozens.
At about five o'clock on June 21st 1799, a Mr. Sutton, keeper of the
"Yarmouth Packet" public house was found hanged in the privy. Once
before he had attempted the same rash act, but was cut down. His
father, brother and sister had put an end to their lives in a
similar way. The coroner's inquest brought in a verdict that he had
taken his own life.
Some 70 years later, according to the Mercury, another landlord
committed suicide in a similar way by hanging himself in the privy. The
"Yarmouth Packet" was a public house that stood on the north-west corner
of Dolphin Street, where it joined Beach Street. It is now a private
house.
The photo below, kindly sent by Patricia Streater is of the house mentioned above at 195 Beach Street.

Misleading information. When I first went to photograph the house I found
a giveaway sign on the glass over the front door identified this building as
the "Yarmouth Packet".
Above photos by Paul Skelton, 26 July 2008. |
I assumed that due to renumbering of the road, the "Yarmouth Packet"
was now listed at number 189 and not 180 as I was given to believe. However,
the glass sign must be incorrect, and I have now amended my mistake, but
left this reference and photograph in, in case someone else finds this
building and make the same assumption. To date there is no evidence that
this premises was connected to the public house of that name.
A relative of Henry West has recently contacted me (Sept 2020) and
explained the reason why the house also has the same name:- "Henry West was
my 3x Great Grandfather and from research I have done on this and a visit to
Deal, I understand the following. Henry West was landlord of the "Yarmouth
Packet" at 180 Beach Street until he retired and moved to a house across the
road, which was then called The Yarmouth Packet. He lived there until he
died in 1872.
The original Inn was on the sea side of the promenade at number 180 (even
number) the house is on the other side of the street, is number 195 (an odd
number).
Due to high tides and sea wall deterioration the Inn was demolished and a
new promenade was built. I don't have the dates for this.
Further information from Pat Wilson explains the following:- The original
pub was on the corner of Dolphin St. 180 was the old number which became
195. Before renumbering happened the numbers were consecutive. Starting at
the sea side with no 1 roughly opposite North Street and going all the way
down to South Street before continuing back up again starting at 80 on the
other side. ie there wasn’t an odd and even side of the road then.
This style still exists in the small roads like mine which confuses the
hell out of people! My street is 1-11 on one side and 12-19 on the other.
The new numbering introduced odd and even so the sea side was then even
and the town side odd. New No 1 was now the old 80! Old No 1 became 202.
So your gentleman Mr. West who moved into 189 after he retired did move
indeed move across the road - Dolphin Street! Just three houses along.
Best wishes,
Pat Wilson.
Above photograph taken by Paul Skelton. Showing the house where
licensee Henry West moved to after his retirement, and obviously called
it the same name as the pub he was in charge of for 25 years. |

Apparently the house closed on 31 December 1919, even though the Post
