Drellingore Alkham
This is a new one on me and found by Jan Pedersen in an 1859 edition of the Folkestone Chronicles it appears that Alkham also used to have a brewery. The only connection I can make to date with the name Marsh and Alkham is a passage found regarding a Sarah Ann Marsh, who appears to have had a rather different occupation in 1856, as is shown in my snippet from the "Sheer Hulk" in Dover. As for Spencer, I have found nothing at present.
Further information kindly supplied by Sue Lees says the following:- "Needless to say I just could not resist looking for info. When you told me the story it brought back a memory to a brewery at South Alkham rather than Drellingore. Looking at Census that is the only one specified in 1851. The surprising thing is that it is mentioned in my transcript of the census NOT the one that is now on the internet. It just shows how people need to check with the original - here is my version:-
1851 Census. No.87 John MARSH md 41 farmer & malt brewer bn Alkham Susannah .. md 31 wife .. A. S. .. s 9 daughter, scholar .. M. M. .. s 6 daughter, scholar .. Susannah .. s 3 daughter (at home) .. Caroline Keeler s 16 female servant ..
This is/was the house opposite HOPTON COURT and was/is called UPTON.
