1 & 2 Abbey Street

The photo above shows the buildings that were at 1-2 Abbey Street but which were demolished for the widening of Quay Lane. Part of the site was used by Rigden's Brewery to build their new bottling plant. Beer came from the brewery, on the other said of the road, via a tunnel. The tunnel, although still there has been blocked off at the Tesco end.

Church Street 1890

The above photo is of Church Street circa 1890 and shows the houses that were demolished in 1900 to make room for an extension of the Rigden brewery. Rigden's later became the Whitbread Fremlin brewery. Below show the same position 2012.

ACCIDENT TO A BREWER'S DRAYMAN.

On Wednesday last, Henry Johnson, a drayman, in the employ of Messrs. W. E. and J. Rigden, met with a serious accident whilst in charge of a load of beer at Sittingbourne. When in East Street in that town the breeching of one of the Lories became unfastened and he got down to attend to it. Before he had finished the horses started, and Johnson fell to the ground, the wheel of the draw passing over his shoulder, causing a bad fracture, while he also sustained a severe abrasion of the face. Dr. R. M. Boodle attended him, and later in the day he was removed to Faversham. He has since been under the treatment of Dr. Anderson, and is now progressing satisfactorily.
