Admiral Gordon sign 2014

Above sign by Roy Moore, 18 May 2014.

Named after Rear Admiral Sir James Alexander Gordon KCB who had served with Nelson and is thought may have been, in part, a model for C S Forester's hero Horatio Hornblower.

In 1869-70 the pub was part of a consortium who were advertising their goods of selling tea in response to grocers' selling beer and wine. (Click for further details.)

Still open in 2014, the pub had closed by 2019, exact date unknown, local knowledge appreciated, but currently there is planning permission applied for conversion into a shop.

Jeff East tells me that it is now (January 2022) operating as a convenience store.
