This pub is one in the list of my "Project 2014."

Unfortunately I haven't managed to find a picture of this pub at present but the research continues. Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.

From the Southeastern Gazette, 30 January 1866.

CITY PETTY SESSIONS.

Saturday. (Before Aldermen J. L. Levy, Coles, and Webb, P. Farrell, J. Thomas, H. Everest, and W. Bell, Esqrs.)

Richard Still, an army pensioner, was charged, under the Mutiny Act, with purchasing four shirts from soldiers.

A private of the 4th King’s Own Regiment, named William Adams, proved meeting with the prisoner at the “Fortune of War” public-house, near College-yard, and selling him his shirt, a Royal Marine, named Lucas, at the same time selling three other shirts to the prisoner, who gave him 5s. for them.

Lucas was called, but swore positively that he had non seen the prisoner on the day in question, and he did not “believe” he was at the public-house as stated by the other witness.

The Mayor told the prisoner he had aggravated his offence by bringing a witness to swear as he had. As an old soldier he knew he was doing wrong in buying the articles, and he would therefore pay a fine of 5 guineas and the costs, making in all £6 12s. 6d. and in default three months’ hard labour.

From an email received 27 April 2022.

My Great Great Grandfather Jabez Latter was listed in the Post Office Directory for Rochester, Kent as being The keeper/landlord of the "Fortune of War," High Street, Rochester.

Unfortunately he was charged on the information of an inspector Viney,  on 20th June, 1863, with having a number of beer measures in his possession all below the standard.

The Bench fined him 2s 6d and costs and ordered the measures to be forfeited.

He died 31st December, 1866. Cause of death was alcohol related.

Regards,

Linda Holland.
