Above postcard, circa 1906, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. Although the pub
appears on a list of tied houses, within the estate of Budden & Biggs'
Steam Brewery, Strood, the sign over the door reads "...Meux & Co's
Brilliant Ales London Porter & Double Stout..." It's more than likely
that Budden & Biggs acted as agents for Meux, allowing tenants to order
their bottled beers. In those pre-WW1 days, London was more famous than
Dublin, for brewing well-regarded stouts and porters However, during
WW1, tight restrictions were imposed on the use of barley and the
quality of beer, particularly stronger/darker brews, suffered. These
restrictions didn't apply to Irish brewers though, resulting in
customers switching allegiance and preferring to drink Dublin-brewed
stout.
In the background is the "King's Head Hotel," which advertises
Frederick Leney & Son's Wateringbury Ales. |
The building was demolished in 1919 and replaced by the building shown
below.
