The Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre has referenced a set of documents, that I haven't seen yet, and is part of the Watts Charity MSS, 1579-1972.

Reference is made as follows:-

1655-1753

T4. Premises in Chatham and Rochester St. Nicholas [including several parts of the Town Ditch, in particular an, agreement by Richard Head, 1675, to build a brick stable, hayloft and coachhouse; land near a watermill called the Town Mill; 2 messuages outside the North Wall in Ship and Trumpet Alley; and the "Red Cow," Bull Lane, all in St. Nicholas, Rochester; and a wharf in Chatham] (12 docs.)

[Original bundle no. 5]

Dean and Chapter of Rochester Leases Rochester 30 November 1820 Quantity: 2 items.

THE RED COW.

This property was made up of three tenements: from 1661-1750 one tenement was leased separately from the others, but thereafter all three were leased together. For this reason the bundle of leases has been divided into three groups: leases of the two tenements under one roof known as the "Red Cow;" leases of the single tenement which was also under the same roof; and leases of the three tenements together.

3 messuages under one roof on the south side of the High Street, lying west of the "Black Boy" and north of St. Nicholas churchyard in St. Nicholas, Rochester.

A, B Lessee: James Brock of Titchfield, Southampton, Hampshire, victualler Term: 40 years Rent: 12s. + 4s. and £3,12s + £1.16s. Land Tax.
