The High Street has at some time been renamed Dartmouth Road.

The pub was operating under a full licence by 1908.

Sydenham was located in Kent until 1889 when the County of London was formed and in 1965 it became part of the current London Borough. It is now a suburban district of South London in the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley and Southwark.

Owned by Youngs of Wandsworth till 2014 when it became a Free House.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 30 August, 1856.

Joseph Eardley, a labourer, was charged with the following daring robbery.

The prisoner entered the "Bricklayer's Arms tavern," Sydenham hill, (is this indeed the correct pub? Paul Skelton) and while the back of the bar maid was turned, dexterously managed to extract a cheese from a safe alongside the bar. The bar maid hearing a noise, suddenly turned round, and observing the prisoner tucking the cheese under his smock frock, said, "Hollo! you’ve got our cheese!" The prisoner was somewhat startled, when the bar maid continued, "I shall give you into custody." The prisoner said, "Oh, don't." A constable was, however, sent for and the prisoner given in charge.

The prisoner, who exhibited a look of resignation, penitence, and sorrow, confessed his guilt.

His magistrate having been informed that the prisoner was an old offender, at once committed him to hard labour for six months.

Sydenham Times, 15 April 1862.

On Tuesday, April 8th, Robert Wortley alias Norfolk Bob who was charged on the previous day before J. Traill, Esq., at the Greenwich Police Court was again charged before W. Maude, Esq. for similar misconduct.

The prisoner resides at the "Bricklayers Arms," Upper Sydenham, went into Mr. Gay's at the "Dartmouth Arms," Forest Hill, and commenced creating a disturbance. When requested to leave by the barman he refused, and used violent and obscene language to the annoyance of all present. Fined 40s. or one months imprisonment.
