From the Southeastern Gazette, 24 July 1866.
Robbery by A Soldier.
After the above cases had been disposed of, William Wilson, a soldier
was put forward on a charge of stealing the sum of 9s. 2d., belonging to
William Grany. The wife of the prosecutor was in the tap-room of the
“George” public-house, Strood, on the previous Tuesday evening; the
prisoner, who was an entire stranger to her, sitting next to her. From
the circumstance of his twice hurriedly leaving the room, the
prosecutrix had her suspicions aroused, and she then found that her
handkerchief, in which the money given her by her husband had been
placed, had been stolen. Among the money was a crown-piece, and this,
with other coins, was found on the prisoner when he was searched by the
police. The prisoner, who pleaded “guilty” and expressed his sorrow for
what he had done, was sentenced to a month’s hard labour.
