From The Era 9 September 1849.

Rising Sun, St. Mary's Cray.

Mary Ann Roberts, by Mr. Gratton, her solicitor, asked for a license to this house. Last year a similar application was made, when there was also one in respect of the "Red Lion," standing within 100 yards of the "Rising Sun," and the result was, that the "Red Lion" was licensed. It was now stated that the population of St. Mary's Cray had increased since last September, and that there were fewer inns in the parish than in others in the same division.

License refused.

South Eastern Gazette, 12 March, 1860.

ORPINGTON. Death by Burning.

On Tuesday last an inquest was held at the "Rising Sun," before C. J. Carttar, Esq., coroner, on James William Kemp, a little child about two years and a half old, the son of a labourer employed on the railway works. It appeared that the mother went out for a short time on the previous Friday morning, leaving the deceased and a younger child playing in the room. On her return she found the room full of smoke, and the poor child’s clothes on fire. His cries brought assistance and the flames were extinguished, but, although Mr. Smith, surgeon, rendered every assistance, the poor child died early on the following morning.

Verdict, "Accidental death."

The license of the "Rising Sun Inn," Anglesey Road, Orpington, was transferred from William Watts to William Thomas Kitley.
