of Ladywell Road and subsequently replaced by the fire station, police
station, mortuary and Coroner's Court. Then the "Black Bull." The stream
shown flowing down the High Street from Catford to Lewisham was emptied

Above photo, date unknown. |
Up to and including 1906 the address was at 210, but after that date I
assume the street was renumbered and the address became 316.
Some time in the early 1980s the pub changed name to the "Fox
and Firkin."

Furious Driving.
On Wednesday, Mr. James, landlord of the "Roebuck," Lewisham, and Mr. H. Zouhurst, of Stanshead Lane, Lewisham, appeared in answer to a summoned issued
by the instigation of Mr. John Webber, also of Lewisham, for furiously driving
to the danger of the public.
The evidence of the complainant showed that on the evening of 11th ult, he was
engaged in conversation with a friend outside the "Black Bull Inn" (which stands
back from the High Road some nine feet) when a phaeton drove up, suddenly
wheeled round, and nearly knocked down a lady named Kensington, who was walking
on the footpath at the time.
He went up to the gentleman and asked them for their names and addresses, which
they refused to give, until the arrival of a constable.
The defendant Janes made use of very disgraceful language, and also threatened
to strike him, but here the witness put himself in a pugilistic attitude, and
explained to the worthy magistrate how he frightened Jane's by exclaiming "Hands
off - touch me at your peril.) did not do so.
The lady referred to above, confirmed the complainant's evidence, and said that
had he not ran into the door of the "Black Bull," she must inevitably been
knocked down.
After hearing a witness "who saw very little of the altercation" for the
defendants, Mr. Traill said they had conducting themselves in a highly improper
manner; and had anything happened they would have been most undoubtedly indicted
four manslaughter.
The defendant Janes would find bail in £10 for his good behaviour for the next
three months, and Zouhurst must pay a fine of £2 with 6s. costs.
