General Gordon David Bowie 1969

Above photo taken 31 October 1969, showing David Bowie performing inside the "General Gordon." He had just released Space Oddity and was paid £120 to perform that night. From here he went on to play at the "Aurora Hotel," in Gillingham and the entry fee was 8s. 6d. (42p). The night started with him performing Space Oddity on an acoustic guitar. No backing and no band. The venue was packed but no one was impressed. He then sat on a stool and started to read poems.

The local residents of the Kings Farm estate were more accustomed to pub rock bands than a performer of poems and one acoustic song. Cigarette butts were thrown at Bowie, and he was booed off stage and not re-booked.

Starting life with this name in 1932, the pub obviously had a blip between 1976 and 1983 when it changed name to the "Gay Gordons," probably to attract the gay community, but reverted back to the "General Gordon" again in 1893.

The pub unfortunately closed shortly after a fire occurred in 1992.
