Unprovoked Assault.
John Robinson Anthony, a boiler maker, living at 22, Catherine Grove, Greenwich,
was charged, before Mr. Traill, with creating a disturbance in South Street, and
assaulting a young man named Mcgurin, of Blissett Street.
The complainant was standing outside the "Guildford Arms," at a late hour on
Saturday when the prisoner, who was the worst for liquor, struck him a blow in
the mouth knocking him down senseless; he also missed a gold scarf pin from his
breast, and which he suspected the prisoner to have taken.
In defence, the prisoner said that the complainant had nearly pulled a piece of
flesh out of his cheek, and they had been quarreling together previously.
Mr. Traill ordered him to pay a fine of 20s., for creating a disturbance, with
15s. costs for the breast pin.

An inquest was held on Friday evening at the "Guildford Arms," Greenwich,
touching the sudden death of Mrs. Carttar, the esteemed wife of C. J. Carttar,
Coroner, Catherine Grove, Greenwich.
The deceased lady accompanied one of her daughters to Lewisham on the morning
proceeding her death, and after dinner on her return home she complained of
pain, which he attributed to having eaten a pare. She afterwards returned to the
drawing room, and on passing into the dining room fell down in the hall. Medical
aid was obtained, but was of no use.
Mr. Smith, surgeon, with doctors Rook and Cogan, having made an examination of
the body, a verdict was returned of "Died from natural causes."
The sudden death of this lady, who was much and deservedly esteemed for her
worth and goodness, has caused the deepest regret, and much sympathy is felt for
Mr. Carttar and family in their bereavement.

The Guildford Arms in Greenwich has been named the best dining pub in
London by the Good Pubs Guide 2018.
Polina Minkova, manager at The Guildford Arms, said: “It means a lot to
us. It’s quite big publicity, obviously, and we are ready for more
people to find out about us.
“It’s a complex of reasons why I think we won the award. First, the
quality of the food, but also the venue and the service.”
Published today, the Guide lists the top dining pubs in every county in
England and a national title for Wales and Scotland.
Fiona Stapley, editor of the Guide, said: “Good pubs are run by
naturally hospitable people who provide an equally warm welcome to
regulars and visitors – everyone can feel at home and valued. We feel we
belong, we matter and for a while the cares and clutter of daily life
can be left behind, and this makes us happy.”
