The building was built in 1841-42 as the Literary and Scientific Institution. With an excellent library and reading rooms, a splendidly fitted assembly room, a billiard room of the first order.

Starting life as the "Institute Shades" in 1846.  It became the "Palace of Varieties" in 1884 to 1886, the "Prince of Wales Theatre" between 1894 and 1898, the "Grand Bars" in 1898 till 1953 the building was demolished in 1959, rebuilt and changed names to the "Call Boy," it remained with that name till 2010 when it was renamed "Bar Liquorice" for two years. Then for a short time to the "End," after May 2012 saw its latest change to "Angels."
