Fatal Accident.

On Friday afternoon, an inquest was held at the "Morden Arms Tavern," Greenwich before Mr. Carttar, coroner for West Kent, on the body of Charles Hampden, of Addey-street, Deptford. From the evidence it appeared that, on the previous evening the deceased was attending a vehicle loaded with heavy machinery from the factory of Messrs. Penn, engineers, when by some means his left leg came in contact with one of the wheels and the waggon passed over his body crushing the unfortunate man in a frightful manner. Medical assistance was instantly procured, but life was extinct a few minutes after the accident. Verdict, "Accidental Death."

The South-east London Crib League (SLCL) holds Cribbage night at their annual charity event.

The South-east London Crib League (SLCL) will be holding their annual charity night next week.

Cribbage is a card game that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points and involves a board for score keeping.

It is the only card game that is legally playable on licensed premises, pubs or clubs, without requiring local authority permission.

This will be the eighth year that SLCL have hosted their charity night and they have raised more than £3,000 so far.

This year it will be held in the Morden Arms, Brand Street, on December 10.

SLCL member John O’Connor said: “It started as recognition and thanks for the care the Lewisham Hospital ICU, HDU & Pain Team – Critical Care Unit, gave one of our members, which receive these funds.

“Last year we raised a magnificent £1,200 and there will be a presentation of awards for the previous season.

“The crib league has been going since the early 1980s and has men and women of all ages and abilities but has been in decline of late.

“But, it has begun recruiting new members and teams over the last few years, mostly younger players.

“The Morden Arms started three years ago and in that time have introduced quite a few players to the game.”

The league teams are based in Lewisham and Greenwich.
