Three Crowns bottle 1760s

This early Fulhamware salt glazed ale bottle with applied tavern sign plaque dates to 1764 to 1774 when John Lane was the landlord of the Three Crowns in West Street (his surname was incorrectly spelt as 'Lean' on the bottle). It was formerly in the collection of Robin Hildyard who was curator of the Ceramics Department at the Victoria & Albert Museum London, & remains the only known example of it's type. The original pub was destroyed by fire & rebuilt in 1887, fortunately the sign that was set in the brickwork was saved when the building was demolished to make way for blocks of flats.

This dated from 1632, was rebuilt in 1887 and closed in 1930. It was used as a headquarters by Gravesend Theatre Guild in the 1950s and 1960s.
