The building can be traced back to 1681 when it was known as the "Duke's Head" but changed name between 1703 and 1861 to the "British Tar" and finally by 1891 to the name we know today.

During the Covid 19 crisis of 2020, this pub was able to offer a take away service in June, possibly earlier.

Come October 2024, the pub changed name to the "Lion."
