Paperhanger's Arms

One time Off-Licence for Frederick Leney.

Richard William Teer is first mentioned in Kelly's directory of 1934 as being a beer retailer, but no name was given to the house.

In 2009 it was serving as an off-license and had changed name to the "Papermaker's Arms."

From and Email received 30 October 2022.

My grandmother Ethel Elizabeth Crittenden and her first husband move to the "Papermakers Arms" around 1906-1908.

Her husband, Edmund Crittenden died in 1909 but Ethel retained the licence. She married my grandfather Clarence Jennings in 1915 before he went off to war. When Clarence returned they had two daughters and remained at the "Papermakers Arms" until some point between 1924 and 1939. They are recorded as resident in Rochester during the second world war.

The 1911 census shows Ethel Elizabeth Crittenden as widowed and head of household at the Papermakers Arms. Her occupation is shown as "shop keeper" with "off-licence" added to the record. I was puzzled about this designation because the name suggest that it was a pub, but your records confirm that it was in fact (at least at that time) an off-licence.

The 1901 census shows the Crittendens as resident at the "Rose and Crown," 169 High St, West Malling. Their children were however born after that date in Tunbridge Wells, so I think they might have moved from West Malling to Tunbridge Wells and then Snodland

Regards,

Richard Groom.
