The Licensing Records of 1872 stated the premises held a Beer License and was owned by Elizabeth Rebecca Boys of Fort Pitt Street, Ordnance Place, Chatham.

 

I believe all the original premises at Fort Pitt Street have been redeveloped and is now a housing estate.

HAMMOND Robert George of the " Rose and Crown " public-house Chatham died 9 August 1906 at Chatham-station Chatham Probate London 21 September to Patience Eleanor Hammond widow Effects £815.

News items:

"Half an hour after he had left the house the dead body of Robert George Hammond, 44, landlord of the "Rose and Crown Inn," was discovered yesterday at the foot of the cliff at the entrance to Chatham Tunnel. The skull was fractured."

 

The Coroner's report stated that he suffered from "Temporary Insanity."

"At the Chatham inquest on Friday on Robert George Hammond, who threw himself over a cliff, the coroner commented upon the large number of suicides that had resulted from the excessive heat."
