Above photo 1903, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. By the time this photo was taken, the site of the "Hope Inn" had been redeveloped and St. George's Hall is the building in shot. No idea what the occasion was, or why the (presumably Catholic?) procession is heading into the city.

ANNUAL LICENSING DAY.

New licenses were granted to the following houses:— "Hope Tavern."

 

Canterbury Journal, Kentish Times and Farmers' Gazette, Saturday 14 December 1872.

"Hope Tavern." Parade, Canterbury.

Mrs. S. Page, having taken the above Tavern, thanks to inform her friends and the public that the business will be carried on there with the same attention to their comfort and convenience which insured for her such liberal patronage during the many years she kept the Windsor Castle. Good beds. Dinners and other refreshments provided on the shortest notice and on the most reasonable terms. Genuine wines and spirits, draught and bottled oils and stay out of the best quality.

 

This was on the site of St. George's Hall.
