North Star 1909

Broadstairs and St Peter’s Fire Brigade attending a fire at two cottages in Trinity Square, Reading Street. The fire broke out at 9.30 p.m. on 22 July 1909, the occupants being Mr. Edward Fagg and Mr. and Mrs. Brookes and their four children. The fire was started by the younger child, Frank Brookes, who lent out of a window holding a lighted candle which set the curtains alight and, in turn, the thatched roof. Both families escaped without harm but their dwellings were destroyed. The cottages had formerly been a notorious public house called the "North Star" renowned for its smuggling connections.

I am informed that the original pub was closed due to its smuggling connections and finally burnt down on the 22nd July 1909.

I am informed by Michael Mirams that the license of this was transferred to an off license in Ramsgate, that still holds the same name of "North Star."
