The pub was probably named after Sir Alan Cobham who was knighted for his services to aviation. However, there was another "Cobham Inn" operating in the High Street up to 1926 and as early as 1828 which was probably named after the town with that name. This pub closed in 2006 and was operating as a Chinese restaurant in 2008.
