The premises, originally known as the "Cooper's Arms" was established around 1740 by John Hare who owned the nearby brewery. The frontage was rebuilt in 1929-30 to what it looks like today, but it is said that the ornamental lamp came from the original building. In 1890 the building was purchased by E J Rose who used it as a wine shop with bar.
