Slip Mill Lane (High Street 1861 Hawkhurst
I believe the Sawyers Arms was originally called the "Snoring Cat" but as yet do not know when it operated under that name. It was certainly known by this name by the locals who used it, even to later days when it was the "Sawyers Arms." One time local, Roger Smith tells me the following:- The establishment was little larger than a normal terraced house with the bar being the front sitting room with a small bar (serving good beer - Fremlins I think) but no food apart from crisps, pickled onions and pickled eggs. I think that the pub closed and was turned into a private house when I was away from Hawkhurst from 1974 - 1976." Today the premises has been converted into residential premises, one called the Sawyers Croft and the other, Snoring Cat Cottage. I believe this happened some time about 1975.
