Canterbury

This is a new one for me and only found to date in 1748.

There is a "Duke's Head" in Wincheap and it is possible that this is one and the same and that it changed name between 1748 and 1792. Or perhaps the naming was a misprint in the Derby Mercury.

Derby Mercury, Friday 01 July 1748.

Country News. Canterbury, June 25th.

On Thursday morning John Ladd, a Marine, was found hanging on a tree behind the "Duke William" in Wincheap, and the coroner's inquest having brought in their verdict Filo de se, he was ordered to be buried in the highway. Just before he hang'd himself he was heard to pray to God to forgive him for what he was going to do; and this poor wretch stole a rope the evening before to put his wicked design in execution.
