309 Evelyn Street (Gibraltar Row 1866)

Deptford

I have no information about this pub at all as present, only that the Lost Pubs Project says that it was addressed as 309 Evelyn Street and has now been demolished, but they didn't say when it closed or was demolished.

Further research suggests it closed around 1944 and the building has since been demolished.

It has also been referred to as the "Old Gibraltar," and "Rock of Gibraltar."

Kentish Independent, Saturday 25 August 1883.

An objection was raised by two neighbouring Licensed Victuallers as to a back way leading from the "Gibraltar Tavern," Gibraltar Road, Deptford, to Sayes Court and a new neighbourhood in that direction.

Mr. W. F. Smee, of the "Globe," Lower Road, who acted as spokesman, stated at this door was not according to the usual requirements of the Bench, and prejudicial to the other licensed houses in the locality. Inspector Turk said that the premises were altered about 18 months ago, in accordance with the plan approved by the Bench. The back door was shewn on the plan, but it may have escaped notice.

Mr. Bachelor, the magistrates' clerk, said that if the renewal of the licence was objected to it would be according to rule, adjourned for argument; but Mr. Smee said he did not object to the licence, but only to the back door. The Bench thereupon decided that the only objection they could hear was not before then, and renewed the licence.
