Mentioned in Steve Glover and Michael Rogers book The Old Pubs of Deal and Walmer. Not to be confused for the "Union Flag," Walmer, which didn't appear till 1804, this has only been traced for a couple of years with this name. A lease found in 1727 states that this was previously called the "Cross Keys." However, but 1729 it had changed name to the "Hamburg Ensign."
