Standing Cross

Matfield

Local knowledge definitely required for this one, N Chadwick seems to indicate that the pub was called the "Morello" but the Closed Pubs Project indicates that this was the "Standing's Cross."

Further research seems to indicate that a building addressed at Standing Cross, Matfield is now known as the "Poet" and is operating as a restaurant.

I would like to know where about in the scheme of time the "George" was involved in all of this. Please email me below if you can sort it out.

Robert Marshall tells me the following:- "I think this is a mistake. The "Standing's Cross" had St George defeating the dragon as its sign for some years, but that is the only connection. I knew the landlord of the time, and it was never called the George.

I think that explains it and I'll be deleting this page eventually.
