PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1866-

Fox and Hounds

Latest 1871+

Cudham

This one has only just come to light from the Census reports of 1871, and that is all the information I know about this to date.

I am pretty certain that this is actually the "Fox and Hounds" at Westerham.

From the Southeastern Gazette, 24 April 1866.

Petty Sessions, Monday. (Before G. W. Norman, Esq., in the chair, R. B. Berens, A. Beattie, P. M. Lewin, and A Hamilton, Esqrs.)

William Beadle was charged with assaulting Thomas Markham, at the “Fox and Hounds” public-house, Cudham, on the 29th March. The complainant expostulated with the defendant for using insulting language to two females, and Markham then struck him. A fight ensued, and the defendant drew a knife, with which he attempted to stab the complainant, but he succeeded in cutting his coat only.

Fined 40s., costs 13s. 6d.; a month’s imprisonment in default. The Chairman said that they would have sent the case for trial, had they been satisfied that the knife was intended to be used in feloniously wounding.
