Otterham Quay Lane Rainham
The Pear Tree was an establishment identified by Ron Baldwin in his book "The Gillingham Chronicles" as follows:- "Many of Rainham’s public houses were built along the two main thoroughfares, Watling Street and the Lower Rainham Road, where they could catch the passing trade. Along Watling Street there were, at various times, the "George" (or "George and Dragon") in Moor Street, the "Pear Tree" [near the top of Otterham Quay Lane], the "Crown," "Rose Inn" [at the corner of High Dewar Road] and "Man of Kent" in Broad Walk. I am informed by David Auger that this was situated near the top of Otterham Quay Lane at the A2 end and was probably virtually opposite to the "Man of Kent," who goes on to say:- I have found no other mention of it yet, but on terraced houses 4 and 6 Otterham Quay Lane there is an interesting rectangular shape which could have once contained a sign of some sort (and I think number 4 has been named Pear Tree Cottage). The pub possibly had closed before 1917 (although there could have been other local dwellings called Pear Tree Cottage).
