Orlastone Ham Street
One can only surmise to the date this one as the building we see today and known as the "Duke's Head" was a new build around 1939. There have been 2 Georges who became the Duke of Cumberland, the first being the second son of Frederick III, King of Demark, George married Princess Anne in 1683. There was not much affection for George in England: he was widely held to be lazy, incompetent, hypocritical, and to speak poor English. The second George being George Friedrich Alexander Karl Ernst, the last king of Hanover, reigning from 18 November 1851 to 20 September 1866. We know that the building was known as the "Duke's Head" from 1802, so the George we are looking at would have had to have been the early one from the 17th century. I believe once this George was made the "Duke of Cumberland" around 1688, the pub in his honour changed name to show that he was now the "Duke of Cumberland" and for that reason I would say this building would have to predate that year. It is suggested that the pub changed name to the "Three Mariners" at some stage, but any definite documentation has as yet not come to light.
