Walmer

I have found mention of this pub from a list of former pubs of Deal and Walmer at Deal library. To date I have no further information regarding this establishment. The original research was carried out by A. L. Langridge in 1977 and says the information has been unconfirmed.

However, since the above, I have now found reference to the pub in the Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich Mercury, 1900.

Steve Glover does suggest that this pub could relate to the "Admiral Owen" of Sandwich and that confusion has been made in Langridge's research.

KEEPING UP SHAMROCK DAY

Thomas Goodban was summoned for refusing to leave the premises of the "Admiral Owen," when requested to by the landlord (Mr. Percival Renton) on the 17th inst.

Dr. Hardman, who prosecuted on behalf of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, said the defendant came to the house on the 17th inst. he had used very bad language to Mrs. Renton on a previous occasion. In the present instance, Mrs. Renton was in the bar, and she refused to serve him, as he had already had too much to drink, and at once called Mr. Renton. There were about twenty people in the two bars, and the defendant was still using bad language. As he refused to leave when requested to by the landlord, he was put outside, but came back, and held a penny in his hand, with which he deliberately smashed a window. He (Dr. Hardman) would not call any evidence, as it would add to the cost of the proceedings, and he thought the Bench were convinced that the offence had been committed.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty, for excuse said he had fallen in with several Irishmen, who were "keeping up Shamrock Day," and he had had a glass or two too much. He had borne a good character, and was in the Post-office some time.

Fined 5s. and 8s. costs. Allowed a week for payment.
