Market Place

Dover

Titled the "Bull" with a large assembly room at the back for meetings and concerts. A passage, used for the movement of French prisoners, ran from here to the Western Heights, changed name to the "Guildhall Vaults" around 1600 when it was under control of the Mayor of Dover, John Bachelor at the time.

However, further research has turned up this mention in the Kent Post of 1732. So perhaps it didn't change name at all, or this could well be another house in the same area?

The Dover Chronicles on 7 May 1842, printed a list of "Inns & Innkeepers of Dover A.D. 1713. Unfortunately no addresses were given.

From the Kentish Weekly Post, 19 March, 1726.

To be Lett at Dover next Lady Day.

The "Bull Inn," near the Market Place, a very good accustomed house, with all necessary conveniences. Enquire at the said house.

From the Kentish Weekly Post, 26 March, 1726.

The "Bull Inn" near the Market Place in Dover, which was Advertised to be Lett in the Canterbury News Paper last Saturday proves a mistake, for Mrs. Margaret Dunnings, Daughter of the Widow Timberland, continues to keep the said House, where Gentlemen and others will find very good usage.

From the Dover Chronicles, 7 May 1842.
