Franklin and Firkin

The Firkin Brewery chain of pubs was established in 1979 but Punch Taverns bought the entire chain in 1999. The name was adopted by the Firkin chain as the result of a competition, which was won by local basketball legend, Tony Homersham.

This house opened quite late in the Firkin's reign, but lasted till September 2001.

The name Franklin being a character in one of Chaucer's tales. All Firkin pubs had to have a prefix beginning with the letter "F" by the way. The interior had dark wooden walls and floor and was popular with the younger generation.

It is now (2022) called the "Old Buttermarket."
