GRANVILLE ARMS' LANDLADY BOWS OUT.
SAD FAREWELL: Sandra Crossland outside the "Granville Arms" In Walmer,
now about to close Picture: Terry Scott P01B09699.
A FINAL pint of beer is about to be pulled at the "Granville Arms" in
Walmer as Sandra Crossland retires and closes the pub doors for the last
time.
She has been at the free-house since 1997 and with her 67th birthday
on the way has decided to retire.
"I have had the best of times in the pub business and it is going to
be sad to close. I am not looking forward to that one bit. My partner
Brian and I have made some good friends - they are not just customers!
"The "Granville Arms" will never open again as a pub. We bought the
place 14 years ago and will continue to live here, although downstairs
will probably be converted into a flat."
About 35 years ago, Sandra went into the pub trade when she was
offered a few hours work at lunchtimes at the "Admiral Keppel" at Upper
Deal, in the days when pubs shut at 2.30pm.
"I thought at the time 'I quite like this' and when the licensees
left I took it on. I am not sure I knew what I was doing, but all the
family mucked in and they were wonderful times.
"Then the "Granville Arms" was on offer for a good price, so we moved
here. Now it is heartbreaking to see so many pubs close and business has
been bad for the past two years."
Sandra blames the smoking ban, cheap alcohol on sale at more shops
and the onslaught of new rules and regulations.
She is now looking forward to retirement and to seeing more of her
three daughters, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
"Brian and I are also looking forward to holidays, without having to
find someone to run the pub while we are away!" Sandra will still be
seeing some of her long-time customers though, as she is joining some
from the "Granville's" darts team to play at Bettshanger Sports and
Social Club.

Last orders by Steve Glover and Michael Rogers.
The "Granville Arms" opened in 1866, conveniently situated close to the
barracks. An 1888 sales' catalogue described it as being ‘a fully licensed
corner house comprising "Granville Arms," Granville Mews and Granville
House'. There were also stables and coach houses at the rear. The last
landlady, Sandra Crossland, redeemed the licence on March 18, 2011, and the
pub is now a private house.
|
The pub opened in the 1860s and its name was inspired by Earl
Granville, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
Originally advertised by Porters Chartered Surveyors as early as 18
August 2005 in both the "Publican" and the "Morning Advertiser" with a
freehold price of £285,000, advertising a ground floor, open plan bar area,
ladies and gents toilets, basement cellar, enclosed rear courtyard, and
first floor sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and 2 bedrooms, and planning
permission applied for change of use to use of ground floor to a flat and
alterations, this pub closed its doors for the last time in February
2011.
