Not to be confused with the "Harp Inn" in Middle Street this premises was found as early as 1804 but auctioned off in 1828 with some other public-houses in the sale of the Manor of Chamberlain's fee.

1840 saw the house still serving ale, but unlicensed and that same year saw brewers Edward Iggulden buy the capstan land opposite.

The premises changed name to the "Pelican" before 1851.
