47 Beach Street 105 Beach Street Deal
Lord Keith was an admiral who distinguished himself in a number of battles against the French, and he also took the Cape of Good Hope away from the Dutch. He was often in Deal when anchored in the Downs and when attacking Boulogne used "fire ships" and sky rockets. The last time he was in Deal was in 1818 when, as controller of the Duke of Clarence's household, he greeted Princess Adelaide when he stepped ashore.
Mentioned in Pigot's directory of 1828, but I have seen no sign of it after that year. However, according to the Deal History Society, this pub has also been called the "Antwerp," and that information ties up nicely with what I have found. Earliest known date I have found for the "Antwerp" is 1840. http://home.freeuk.net/eastkent/deal/pubs.htm
Further research stated in the Deal Licensing Register that the pub changed name to the "Antwerp" on 8 September 1836. Deal Borough Records 1841 show in a Schedule of Deeds:- Purchase of capstan ground opposite the "Lord Keith." Although the years seem to overlap, very often folk were slow to refer to pubs by their new names.
