Former Margate Hoy

Above photo, 2009 kindly sent by Steve Glover and Michael Rogers.

James Neale was licensee in 1699 and previous to this date the house was referred to as the "Loyon and Whelp" or "Lyon and Whelp" and previous to that the "Tangier Arms."

This establishment consisted of two tenements situated on the corner of Middle Street and Market Street.

By 1740 the premises was used by William Crump, a joiner, but it is unclear whether beer was still sold on the premises.

In 1789 it appears that the building was rebuilt and in 1795 brewer John Iggulden Esq, took over the premises.

Information above taken from the research of Steve Glover and Michael Rogers.

The premises can be seen on a local map (date unknown) which also shows "Garibaldi's Beer House," and this has been identified from between 1861 and 1863, so this house must have been operating as late as those years.

Diagonally opposite was the "White Horse," also shown on the same map.
