Charlton Green Dover
Present in 1854, but two years later the name changed to "City of Charlton". Without a full address the mind boggles. I have the name James Elgar as licensee of this one and James Coveney as licensee of the "City of Charlton". I am always wary when names of licensees are similar, as in this case the first name the same. Often mistakes were made in the printing of the information. The only reason I mention this is because a James Elgar pops up again 25 years later at the "Albion," if indeed the same person. As James Coveney seems to disappear as soon as the pub changes name and no mention of it after that date, this also makes me ask the question whether the pub did in fact last till 1879 when Elgar pops up again. Time will tell whether I get to the bottom of this one.
