been the Monastery Inn, at the far-left end of Church Street, with what
looks like window awnings fitted. By the time this photograph was taken,
the pub had ceased trading as a pub and prior to it becoming the
Monastery Coffee Tavern, the building had hosted John Welsh's bakery and
shop. |

On Friday evening for 27th ultimo, Mr. Coroner Delasaux held an inquest
at the "Monastery Tavern," Longport, on the body of Edward Hadley, age
73, a builders labourer.
It appeared that, on the afternoon of the previous day, the deceased was
standing on a ladder reared against a house and Castle Street, on which
he was at work, and while in the act of reaching out for something on
the building, the ladder slipped and fell to the ground, he falling with
its.
He was picked up, bleeding from both ears and insensible, and was taken
to the hospital where he died shortly after 5 o'clock.
The occurrence appeared to have been purely accidental, and the jury
returned a verdict accordingly.
