44 Beach Street

Deal

This pub, started life as early as 1661 as the "Fountain," near Oak Street, not to be confused with the other "Fountain" also on Beach Street but the other side of the "Royal Hotel". By 1674 it had changed name to the "Prince of Orange", and by 1719 to the "Fleece". Although having said that, below is reference indicating that the "Pelican" was named that as far back as 1636 and was an old building even then.

Anyway, later research has turned up mention of the "Pelican with Capstan" on Beach Street in 1804.

I do not have reference to the "Fleece" any earlier than 1730, or any later than 1876.

From the Kentish Gazette, 30 October 1810.

DEATH.

Sunday morning, Mr. Mathew Castle, landlord of the "Pelican" public-house, Deal.
