Inside the theatre

Above shows the inside of the theatre circa 1988.

Panel inside theatre

Above showing one of the panels at the now "Penny Theatre."

Also known as the Alexandra Music Theatre, the premises continued with its theatrical performances till at least 1898 when it unfortunately failed as a theatre, however, the the premises was still licensed till 1903, so the odd performance may have continued.

A balcony inside is believed to have been added in 1860. Its fronts being decorated with 38 paper panels painted in somewhat naive manner, most of them with pictures which seem to form part of a dramatic narrative. The pictures look rather earlier than the hall and are traditionally said to have come from a pleasure garden nearby.

From the Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald. 16 November 1867. Price 1d.

CHARGE AGAINST A PUBLICAN

William Thompson, landlord of the “Princess Alexandria,” was charged with keeping open his house at unlawful hours, on Sunday morning last.

The charge was proved by P.C. Oakenfull, who deposed that he was on duty last Saturday night in Northgate-street, and at about a quarter past one on Sunday morning he saw a soldier and a female come out of the “Princess Alexandria.” This induced him to knock at the door of the house, and the landlord admitted him into the bar, where witness saw some pots containing liquor. There were four men in the bar, one of whom witness was acquainted with.

Defendant said that the evidence the policeman had given was perfectly correct. The men were musicians, and he gave them something to drink before they left.

Fined 2a. and 8s. costs.
