The Prince Consort is still remembered at the "Albert Inn," High Street, opened in 1847 and once the first port of call for coach passengers alighting at Cannon Road Coach Park. In 1881 the premises was identified as a beer house and doesn't appear to be named till 1871. The 1871 census mentions Mary Challis aged 31 shown as Wife, but no occupation. Husband George is shown after the children and is the Head of the family, occupation Porter and the census of 1881 says this was at the "Royal Oak," in Harbour St. I am informed by Keith Clark who says the following:- "I still own The Albert but did close it in September 2018 and rent it out as an unlicensed dwelling. Also own the "Odds," "Camden Arms," and "Deal Cutter" which are all listed buildings with lots of history. We purchased them 20 to 30 years ago at silly prices but the sad truth is that they are uneconomical to operate. Sad truth also is that they are well built properties that are worth more de-licensed than with a license. I am certain that many more will close over the next couple of years."
