Harry's Bar

Originally opened as "Bar 26" but was forced to change name after an application to open, after it was forced to close for various reasons, including fire regulations.

From http://www.thisiskent.co.uk, Friday, April 01, 2011.

TWO Margate women on a quiet night out in Harry's Bar ended up being kicked in the face and beaten in a drunken random attack by a stranger, Margate magistrates heard.

Luke Carter, 22, on a day trip to Thanet from his home in Gravesend, became so intoxicated on a mixture of alcohol and pills he became unable to control his actions, the court heard.

Staff at the seafront pub were praised for sticking to the terms of their licence where it is illegal to serve a drunk alcohol and were exonerated in their actions when he "kicked off" when asked to leave, the court heard.

Jim Harvey, prosecuting, said: "The defendant was totally unknown to the women. He became aggressive when he was refused a drink by a member of staff behind the bar. One of the girls tried to calm him down by suggesting he go with her to the seafront to smoke a cigarette.

"In response he shouted 'slut, bitch, whore' and without warning she was struck a number of times about the head. The other victim saw this happening to her friend and intervened and the defendant kicked her in the face."

Carter admitted two counts of assault by beating on March 21 and was remanded in custody until April 19.

From an email received 10 September, 2013.

Hello....

My name is Timothy Speight and I am the current landlord for Harry's Bar on Margate seafront and thought I would like to aid you should you still be running this site.

I took over the premises from a Miss Karen Stone (previous landlady) on 13/07/2013 after vacating my previous premises the Purple Aubergine.

Since taking over the premises I have pushed the pub into three different directions.

1) Focusing on local regular trade during the mornings into the early afternoon offering a range of discounts and promotions available to regular customers and new customers alike. This has shown a large increase in the early weekday trade and therefore we are gaining a reputation for good friendly customer service within the local community.

2) Continuing with the promotions and our on going improvements within the premises we are pulling in a great tourist trade with the outside courtyard area with tables, chairs and umbrellas it not only has an attractive appeal but when we are able to open the large front window customers can sit/stand and watch the beach and boats with a direct view over the bay.

3) Progressing with the weekend night trade that is rapidly returning to the town Harry's Bar offers a large variety of entertainment from local singers and bands to great DJ sets offering a club atmosphere to the seafront bar. With musical genre through Folk, Country, Pop, House, Techno, R'n'B, Drum and Bass, Dance-hall, Rock, Punk, Ska and Heavy Metal we draw in a larger mixed crowd.

With regards to previous 'trouble' within the premises before I took over there have been a few minor incidents leading in customers being asked to leave the premises but nothing as major as some of your reports with regards to "Bar 26"/"Harry's Bar"

I look forward to hearing from you

Mr T Speight

I have been informed by Michael Mirams that the premises closed in 2015 and is now (2016) operating as a sweet Rock shop.
