MARGATE. Robbing A Mariner.
John Ashbee, a private in the 18th Hussars, was brought before
Alderman Hunter and James Turner, Esq., yesterday, charged by
James Epps, a mariner, with stealing a cloth jackey, value 5s., on
the 14th inst. The prosecutor said he was in Mrs. Lenham's
public-house, Love Lane, on Saturday, and saw the prisoner there,
and treated him to a pint of beer, shortly afterwards he said he had
a headache, and wanted to lie down on the form, and he lent him his
jacket, then lying in the corner, to lay his head on, and afterwards
went out, leaving the prisoner still lying upon it. He did not see
it afterwards, until now. He did not want to hurt the prisoner, as
he did not think he meant to steal the jacket.
P.C. Everett said he met the prisoner, in Long Mill Lane, on
Sunday morning, about half-past four, and he asked him to direct him
to the Dover-road. The officer asked him where he had been sleeping
the last two nights, and prisoner said he had been on the drink and
sleeping in closets. The officer then told him he was wanted on a
charge of stealing the jacket he was then wearing, and he took him
into custody and brought him to the police-station.
The prisoner, in defence, said he did not steal the jacket. It
was lent to him and he was looking for the man who lent it. He had
been in the 18th Hussars since 1857, and be was on leave of absence,
but had lost his pass.
The Bench dismissed the charge of stealing the jacket, but
remanded the prisoner on suspicion of being a deserter. After the
prisoner grot into the station-house again he said he was a deserter
and had no pass and in addition that he was branded with the letter
D.
The Superintendent was directed to communicate with the officer
commanding the depot at Canterbury.
