General Sessions 23 July 1765. Red Lyon. Ann Gittens, of the Town of Folkestone, in the County of Kent,
victualler, Neat Ladd, of the same place, victualler, and Jacob
Boxer, of the same place, victualler, came before me, John Hague
Esq., Mayor, and other, the Jurats of the said town, and
acknowledged themselves indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in
the manner following (that is to say): the said Ann Gittens in ten
pounds and both the aforesaid Neat Ladd and Jacob Boxer in five
pounds apiece as sureties for the said Ann Gittens, to be levied on
each and every of their goods and chattels, lands and tenements, to
and for the only proper use and behove of our said Lord the King,
his heirs and successors. The condition of this recognisance is such that whereas the above
bound Ann Gittens is by the above named Mayor and Jurats licensed
and allowed to keep a common inn or victualling house wherein she
now dwells commonly called or known by the sign of the Red Lyon in
Folkestone aforesaid from the date hereof for one whole year next
ensuing or until the next General Licensing of Victuallers of the
said town and no longer, if the said Ann Gittens shall keep the due
assize of bread and beer and shall not suffer any unlawful game or
games, drunkenness or any other disorder in his (sic) said house,
yard, garden or backside, but shall and do in all things govern the
said house in accordance with the laws of this Realm, that then this
recognisance shall be void, otherwise remain in full force or
