The building is said to have been in existence in 1765 when the pub first opened. By 1793 the name had changed to the "Pack Horse."

Advertisement: Notice is hereby given that the Annual Meeting of the Members of the Union Society, at Folkestone, will be held at the house of Mr. Thomas Marks, the sign of the "Red Lion," in Folkestone, on Monday next, the 11th of July.

Dinner on the table at one o'clock.

A sermon will be preached in the forenoon by the Rev. Mr. Tims.

Before John Castle (Mayor), Thomas Baker, John Stredwick, and Joseph Milton.

William Moon appeared and prayed to have the licence granted to William Palmer at the "Pack Horse" ("Red Lyon" deleted) assigned over to him, which was granted on his entering into a recognisance with two sureties pursuant to the late Act of Parliament, when he proposed William Palmer and George Boxer, who were accepted.
